Adepero Oduye is a multi-talented actress, director, singer, and writer from the United States. Adepero Oduye is famous for her roles in “Law & Order” (2005), “Steel Magnolias” and “12 Years a Slave” (2013).

On the 11th of January 1978, Adepero Oduye was born in Brooklyn, New York, the United States of America. Initially, Adepero Oduye started in minor roles in short films such as “Water” (2002), “Fall” (2004), “Thee and a Half Thoughts” (2006), and “The Tested” (2006). However, her breakthrough role came in 2011 when she starred in Dee Rees’ critically acclaimed and award-winning independent film “Pariah,” for which she received several awards and a nomination for Best Female Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards.

The following year, she joined an all-star cast in the “Steel Magnolias television remake” as Annelle Dupuy-Desoto, a role originally played by Daryl Hannah. Oduye co-starred with Chiwetel Ejiofor in Steve McQueen’s historical drama film “12 Years a Slave,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2014.

She also appeared in Ava DuVernay’s short film “The Door” as part of Miu Miu’s The Women’s Tales advertising campaign. In 2014, she made her directorial debut with “Breaking In,” a short film based on her brother’s early experience about a young black man being stopped and frisked by the NYPD. Several film festivals have recognized and awarded the film.

Following several lead roles in regional theatre productions, including “Eclipsed” and “The Bluest Eye,” Oduye made her Broadway debut in Horton Foote’s The Trip To Bountiful, opposite Cicely Tyson.

She co-starred in Adam McKay’s comedy-drama “The Big Short,” which won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2015. Moreover, she co-starred with Richard Gere in the 2017 drama thriller “The Dinner.” She appeared in the films “Geostorm” and “Widows” in 2018. Moreover, she portrayed activist Nomsa Brath in Ava DuVernay’s miniseries “When They See Us” in 2019.

Meanwhile, she was last seen in the 2020 movie “Tazmanian Devil” where she played the role of Elizabeth Ayodele. Similarly, she recently appeared in the miniseries “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” (2021) and “Five Days at Memorial” (2022).
