Early Life

Aaron Neville was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, the United States, on the 24th of January 1941. His full name is Aaron Joseph Neville and he holds American citizenship.

As a youngster aspiring to be a singer, he frequently got into problems. Growing up in a struggling and impoverished environment surrounded by drug misuse and violence, Aaron acquired a drug addiction and even got himself into legal problems for his actions.

Professional Career

Since 1960, Aaron Neville has been active in the musical industry. Along with his brothers; Cyril, Charles, and Art, he formed an R&B group called “The Hawketts.” The group began performing in New Orleans in the mid-1950s.

In 1954, their song ‘Mardi Gras Mambo’ became a local smash, giving them some small recognition. Aaron was well on his way to becoming a popular musician, but his drug use and terrible company hampered his career.

In 1958, the youngster was caught for automobile theft and sentenced to six months in jail under harsh conditions. Following his imprisonment, he restarted his musical career.

Neville released “Over You” in 1960, and it became his first record to receive airplay outside of New Orleans. It peaked at number 21 on the national R&B charts. Even though he had small singles in the years that followed, his first significant smash came in 1966.

In 1967, his single “Tell It Like It Is,” which was issued on a small New Orleans label, topped Billboard’s R&B chart for five weeks and reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It sold over a million copies and marked Aaron Neville’s breakthrough as a successful singing celebrity.

His fame grew over the years, and he had very productive partnerships with vocalists such as Linda Ronstadt, Anne Murray, and Trisha Yearwood.

Continued his successful career

In addition to his solo career, he was a member of the Neville Brothers group, which had his brothers Cyril, Charles, and Art. The trio formed in 1977 and had numerous popular albums, including “The Neville Brothers” (1978), “Fiyo on the Bayou” (1981), “Uptown” (1987), “Yellow Moon” (1989), “Brother’s Keeper” (1990), and “Family Groove” (1992).

Neville’s other singles were “Everybody Plays the Fool,” his 1991 adaptation of the 1972 Main Ingredient song, which peaked at number eight on the Hot 100; “Don’t Take Away My Heaven,” “Hercules,” and “Can’t Stop My Heart From Loving You (The Rain Song).”

His career spans six decades and includes work for television, film, and athletic events. He sang the national anthem at the WWF SummerSlam in 1993 and the WCW Spring Stampede in 1994, as well as in the 1996 film “The Fan.”

Neville, Aretha Franklin, and Dr. John performed ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ during Super Bowl XL in Detroit, Michigan, in 2006. On October 27, 2006, he appeared on an episode of the soap opera “The Young and the Restless.” In 2011, Neville, together with The Blind Boys of Alabama and Mavis Staples, toured New Zealand. His sixteenth studio album “Apache” was released in the year 2016.

During his career, he has won several awards and nominations. Neville and Linda Ronstadt received a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for ‘Don’t Know Much’ in 1990.

The following year, the pair received the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a pair or Group with Vocals for ‘All My Life.’ In 1992 and 1993, he won the Rolling Stone Critics’ Poll for Best Male Singer. Neville and Trisha Yearwood won the Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Vocal Collaboration in 1994 for ‘I Fall to Pieces.’

Neville was honoured into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2010 while performing at Baton Rouge’s Manship Theater at the Shaw Center. In 2015, he received the University of Notre Dame Laetare Medal for his commitment to the Catholic Church and society.
