John also played one season at the College of San Mateo in the year 1954, he got a football scholarship to the University of Oregon. Similarly, he studied pre-law along with his boyhood friend John Robinson. However, due to a knee injury and knee operation, he could not launch his playing career in the NFL. Likewise, he played both offense and defense for the Mustangs in the year 1957 and 1958 earning a BS in Education in 1959, and in the year 1961, he got MA in Education. Similarly, after winning all-conference honors at offensive tackle, he became a catcher on Cal Poly’s baseball team.

Likewise, in the year 1960, John Madden became an assistant coach at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria which is a city near the Central Coast of California. Following this, he became head coach in the year 1962, and in the 1963 season, he became a defensive assistant coach at San Diego State. Moreover, John made his journey to a professional career after being hired by AI Davis as linebackers coach for the AFL’s Oakland Raiders in the year 1967.
