Javier Báez is a professional baseball player and second baseman for the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball. He was the youngest player when he joined the Chicago Cubs and helped the club win the World Series Championship for the first time since 1908.

Early Life and Childhood

Javier Báez an American baseball player and second batsman of the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball (31 years old) was born on December 1, 1992, in Bayamon, PR, United States. His full name is Ednel Javier “Javy” Báez. His father’s name is Angel Luis Baez and his mother’s name is Nelida Agosto.

He has three siblings. They are Noely Baez, Gadiel Baez, and Rolando Baez. His ethnicity and religion are not known yet. His birth sign is Sagittarius. Unfortunately, his sister, Noely, died on April 8, 2015, aged 21 due to spina bifida.

2011-2018

Javier Báez was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft. His professional career playing in Arizona Cubs in Rookie-level Arizona League. After the good season, he was promoted to Boise Hawks of Class A-Short Season Northwest League. Later, on August 5, 2014, he was promoted to the major league. In his first game, his first career home run with the Cubs game against the Colorado Rockies. In that season he struck 95 times batting .169 with 5 stolen bases, 9 home runs, and 20 RBI. His second year 2015 was not his best season due to the death of his sister and a broken finger. But when he returned he helped the team to advance to Championship Series.

In 2016 Javier led the Cubs to win the National League Championship Series with 6-5 victories since 1906. He was the first Cubs to steal home in the postseason since Jimmy Slagle. Baez along with Jon Lester named NLCS co-MVP, after his illustrious series with .318 with five RBIs, four doubles, two stolen bases three hits, and three RBIs in five games. Then in the 2017  regular season, he scored runs with a .273 average, 23 home runs, 24 doubles, 75 RIBs, 75 runs scored, and 10 stobasesbase.

2018: All-Star season

However, in 2018 he scored 40 RBIs before Memorial Day and became the first Cubs player since Derrek Lee in 2005. He had 606 at-bats with 176 hits and a batting average of .290. where he hit 34 home runs, drove in a league-leading 111 RBIs, and stole 21 bases. The same year he was the second most valuable player after Christian Yelich. He was selected for the All-Star season. This year he played 25 games at a shortstop position where he had 35 hits in 111 plates with 9 home runs at a batting average of .333 with 22 RBIs.

2019; Second All-Star season

Javier Báez has played 25 games at the shortstop position and led in most team-hitting statistics. He made 35 hits in 111 plate appearances with 9 home runs and a batting average of .333. He continued to play with remarkable base-running ability and technique. Likewise, he hit his 100th career home run on June 23, 2019, off of Seth Lugo against the New York Mets.

He along with team-mate Willson Contreras were both named as starters for the All-Star game. They began playing in last season’s game in Washington D.C. On May 19th, he injured his heel while hitting a barehanded pickup and throw on a grounder in the third inning.

During his injury, he had a slash line of .259/.287/.490 with a 96 wRC+, 27.1% strikeout rate. On September 1, 2019, he suffered a fractured thumb during a headfirst slide into the second base. However, it ended his 2019 season, although he did have a few pinch-hitting and pinch-running appearances during the last few games of the year to boost a slumping Cubs team.

Moreover, he won 5th place in the National League in errors with 15. He placed 10th among 15 qualified National League shortstops in fielding percentage. Overall, he has batted a respectable .281 with 29 home runs and 85 RBIs.

International Career

Likewise, he has also played for the Puerto Rican national team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. He won a silver medal and averaged  .296 with one home run, five runs batted in, and four tournament-leading stolen bases. Following the conclusion of the tournament, he joined the 2017 All-World Baseball Classic team.
