Royal Ivey is a former basketball player and coach from the United States. Royal Ivey is currently serving as an assistant coach for the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Early Life
Royal Ivey was born in Harlem, New York, United States, on December 20, 1981. His full name is Royal Terence Ivey and he holds American nationality. In addition, he comes under the birth sign of Sagittarius and is currently 42 years old. Moreover, he belongs to the African-American ethnicity.
He was born to Jennifer Ivey and Rodney Ivey. In addition, he was raised with his brother whose name is Sterling Ivey. Since a young age, he has a keen interest in basketball.
Royal Ivey – Education
He attended Benjamin N. Cardozo High School and started playing in the school basketball team. The team wins a PSAL championship. He went to Blair Academy for a year after completing high school graduation.
Moreover, he played collegiate basketball at the University of Texas in Austin, where he concluded as the school’s all-time game starter (126).
Professional Career
The Atlanta Hawks selected Royal Ivey with the 37th overall pick in the 2004 NBA draft. He signed a one-year contract with the Milwaukee Bucks on the 18th of September 2007. On the 24th of July 2008, he agreed to terms with the Philadelphia 76ers.
On June 15, 2009, Philadelphia announced that Ivey had declined the player option on his contract for the 2009-10 season, leaving him an unrestricted free agent. However, he resigned with the Philadelphia 76ers in August 2009. On February 18, 2010, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, along with Primoz Brezec, for Jodie Meeks and Francisco Elson.
On July 21, 2010, he joined the Oklahoma City Thunder. He made it to the NBA Finals with the Thunder in 2012, but they fell to the Miami Heat. Again, he re-joined the Philadelphia 76ers on the 27th of July 2012.
On September 30, 2013, he signed with the Atlanta Hawks. However, he was released on October 25. On January 16, 2014, he agreed to a 10-day deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder. On January 26, 2014, his 10-day deal expired, and the Thunder declined to grant him another 10-day contract.
He signed with the Guangdong Southern Tigers of China on 29th January 2014 and played for the rest of the 2013–14 season. During his playing career, he was named 2× Big 12 All-Defensive Team (2003, 2004)
Coaching
He started his career working as an assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Blue of the NBA Development League for the 2014–15 season, effectively ending his 10-year playing career. On July 1, 2016, he was promoted from player development assistant with the Blue to assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
On June 7, 2018, he joined the New York Knicks as David Fizdale’s assistant coach. Following Fizdale’s departure, Ivey remained with the Knicks and worked under interim head coach Mike Miller. On November 11, 2020, the Brooklyn Nets hired Ivey as an assistant coach for Steve Nash.
He signed as the head coach of the national team of South Sudan on the 3rd of May 2021. He coached the squad at AfroBasket 2021, the country’s first major tournament. Ivey and South Sudan advanced to the quarterfinals, where they were defeated by reigning champions Tunisia.
South Sudan qualified for its first World Cup in 2023 because of Ivey’s coaching, going unbeaten in first-round qualification. They went on to secure their first Olympic spot in 2024 after finishing as the top African team at the 2023 World Cup. On July 3, 2023, the Houston Rockets hired Ivey as an assistant coach.
