He then started in the films “Fix” (1997), “The Last Days of Disco” (1998), and in the 1989 TV movie called “Gore Vidal’s Billy the Kid.”
He made his directorial debut and wrote the movie “Igby Goes Down” which was later released in 2002. The film is a coming-of-age film that starred Kieran Culkin and Susan Sarandon. Moreover, he also wrote the screenplay for the movie “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” starring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. He has directed episodes of “Weeds,” “The L Word,” “Big Love,” and “The New Normal” on television.

Steers also directed “17 Again,” a 2009 adolescent comedy starring Zac Efron. He directed the 2010 drama “Charlie St. Cloud”, also starring Efron. The same year, he was hired to direct an epic film about the early life of Julius Caesar to be based on the novels by Conn Iggulden as adapted from the first two novels of Iggulden’s series, “The Gates of Rome” and “The Death of Kings,” and covering the years from 92 BC to 71 BC.
He was hired by Exclusive Media Group after the adaptation was written by William Broyles and Stephen Harrigan. “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,” a 2016 film version of the satirical novel, was directed by Steers.
