He was named the head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys on January 3, 2005, succeeding Les Miles who left for LSU. In his early years, he faced the challenge of building and developing the program.
Likewise, under his leadership, Oklahoma State experienced sustained success, achieving bowl appearances and victories. The Cowboys became known for their high-powered offenses and competitive play in the Big 12 Conference. In the 2011 season, they won the Big 12 Championship and secured a spot in the Fiesta Bowl.
Furthermore, Oklahoma State defeated Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl, marking a historic achievement for the program. Also, he has been credited with developing and producing NFL-caliber talent during his tenure, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
