N. K. Jemisin is a science fiction and fantasy writer from the United States. N. K. Jemisin gained widespread recognition and acclaim for her “Broken Earth” trilogy, which consists of three novels: “The Fifth Season” (2015), “The Obelisk Gate” (2016), and “The Stone Sky” (2017).

Early Life

Born Nora Keita Jemisin, better known as N. K. Jemisin was born in Iowa City, Iowa, the United States, on September 19, 1972. She holds US nationality and belongs to the All-American ethnicity. She was born to her parents Noah Jemisin and Janice (Finklea) Jemisin. As a child, she grew up in  New York City and Mobile, Alabama.

Professional Career

Initially, N. K. Jemisin worked as a counselling psychologist and career counsellor before writing full-time. Jemisin, a graduate of the Viable Paradise writing workshop in 2002, has authored short tales and novels.

Additionally, she was a member of the Boston-area writing group BRAWLers and Altered Fluid, a speculative fiction critique group, as of 2010. Further, her short story “Non-Zero Probabilities” got nominations for the Nebula and Hugo Best Short Story Awards in 2009 and 2010.

In 2010, her debut novel, “The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms,” the first volume in her Inheritance Trilogy, got published. “The Broken Kingdoms,” published in 2010, and “The Kingdom of Gods,” published in 2011, were the next two novels in the trilogy.

Recent Works

“The Fifth Season,” the first book in Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy, was released in 2015. The trilogy’s successors, “The Obelisk Gate” and “The Stone Sky,” received the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2017. She was dubbed “the sci-fi writer every woman needs to be reading” by Bustle in 2017.

Moreover, she co-wrote the 2017 book “Mass Effect: Andromeda Initiation with Mac Walters,” the second in a book series based on the video game ‘Mass Effect: Andromeda.’ In November 2018, she released “How Long ’til Black Future Month?” a collection of short stories.

“Far Sector,” a twelve-issue limited series comic written by Jemisin with art by Jamal Campbell, began publication in 2019.  “The City We Became,” Jemisin’s urban fantasy was published in March 2020. Moreover, she was named a MacArthur Fellows Program Genius Grant laureate in October 2020.

Sony’s TriStar Pictures acquired the rights to adapt The Broken Earth trilogy in a seven-figure deal in June 2021, with Jemisin writing the novels for the screen herself. Moreover, she became  Time’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2021. The sequel to Jemisin’s 2020 novel, “The World We Make,” was released in November 2022.
