Ricky Hatton is a British former professional boxer, boxing promoter, and trainer. During his boxing career, Ricky Hatton held multiple world championships at light welterweight and one at welterweight. He has fought a total of 48 professional boxing matches winning a total of 45 matches and 3 losses.

Early Life

Ricky Hatton was born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England, the United Kingdom, on October 6, 1978. His birth name is Richard John Hatton and holds British nationality. He celebrated his birthday on 6th October each year and he is 45 years old as of 2023. According to the astrological chart, he has a birth sign of Libra and he belongs to English ethnicity.

He was born to his father Ray Hatton and his mother Carol Hatton. Moreover, he has a younger brother called Matthew Hatton who is also a professional boxer. In addition, his grandfather and his father both played football for Rochdale whereas Ricky had a trial for the youth team. He used to train at the Sale West ABC (Racecourse Estate) and found a local boxing club in Hyde to train at.

Ricky Hatton – Education

Talking about his academic background, he went to Hattersley High School but dropped out at the age of 16 to pursue boxing full-time. Meanwhile, he also used to handle the family carpet business on leaving school, but after he cut four of his fingers with a Stanley knife, his father made him a salesman to prevent him from losing his fingers.

Professional Career

Ricky Hatton started his amateur career, in which he won seven British titles and represented his country at the 1996 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships. At the age of 18, he turned professional.

On 11 September 1997, he made his professional debut against Colin McAuley in Widnes, which he won by a technical knockout (TKO) in the first round. Soon, he was competing on the undercards of fights involving renowned British fighters, notably Carl Thompson vs. Chris Eubank for the WBO cruiserweight title in 1998.

Moreover, he was selected Young Boxer of the Year by the British Boxing Writers’ Club in 1999. In May 1999, he won his first international championship when he defeated Dillon Carew for the WBO Intercontinental light-welterweight title.

IBF light-welterweight champion

He fought the biggest fight of his career when he faced Kostya Tszyu for the IBF light-welterweight title on 5th June 2005. Moreover, he won the match by TKO in the 11th round, becoming a world champion for the first time.

He then won the WBA light-welterweight title defeating Carlos Maussa in the ninth round of a unification bout on 26th November 2005. In December 2005, he was named the 2005 Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year.

He gave up his IBF title on March 29, 2006, after refusing to fight number one contender Naoufel Ben Rabah in a mandatory defence because he wanted to move up to welterweight. After breaking from long-time promoter Frank Warren, he signed a three-bout contract with Dennis Hobson’s fight academy. The three fights would take place in America.

He then went up a division to meet American Luis Collazo for the WBA welterweight title which took place on 13 May 2006. He won the WBA title defeating Collazo but struggled with Collazo’s slick south-paw style and the extra weight.

Returned to light welterweight and his retirement

In 2007, he returned to light welterweight and won the vacant IBF title as well as the International Boxing Organization (IBO) title for the second time. He suffered his first professional defeat against Floyd Mayweather Jr. to capture the World Boxing Council (WBC), Ring, and lineal welterweight crowns the same year.

His health suffered severely as a result of this setback, as did a second defeat in 2009 when he lost his IBO, Ring, and lineal light-welterweight title against Manny Pacquiao. After this, his career was put on hold for a while, and rumours of a comeback persisted in the media for several years.

Hatton announced his retirement from the sport in 2011. However, he confirmed his return in 2012, more than three years after his previous fight. He announced his retirement shortly after losing to Vyacheslav Senchenko in his first match back.

Since retiring from professional boxing, he has been involved in various activities both inside and outside the world of boxing. He transitioned into a career as a boxing trainer and promoter. Charity

He helped them raise £1,600 at a charity auction by showing up and signing boxing gloves. Hatton was also a special guest speaker at a sportsman’s banquet at the Gosforth Marriott Hotel for The Toby Henderson Trust.

Controversy

During his career, he struggled with alcohol and drug addiction and had several high-profile incidents, including a drunken rant on live television and a highly publicized split with his long-time girlfriend. Hatton was caught on tape sniffing cocaine in 2009. He entered rehab soon after and retired from boxing the following year.
