Santos represented his country Brazil in various age levels. At the 2013 South American Youth Football Championship, he played three times for the Brazil U20 team. On 12 November 2014, he made his international team debut in a 4-0 friendly win against Turkey.
Due to an injury to Luiz Gustavo in June 2015, he was called up to Brazil’s squad for the 2015 Copa America in Chile, starting in their first two Group C matches as they reached the quarter-finals.
Initially, he was selected in the Brazil U23 squad for the 2016 Olympic Games. Shakhtar Donetsk, however, did not allow him to participate in the competition, and he was replaced in the squad by Wallace.
