Professional Career

Vitória Setúbal

Ricardo Horta started his football career after joining Vitoria de Setubal’s youth ranks in 2011, signing from S.L. Benfica. He made his debut for the team on 7th April 2013, coming on as a second-half substitute for Cristiano in a 2-1 away loss against Rio Ave FC in Primeira Liga.

While he made his debut goal for the club on  9th December 2013 against Academica de Coimbra. For the club, he was a regular starter in his second season, playing 28 matches and scoring seven times.

Málaga

On 12th July 2015, he signed a five-year deal with La Liga club Malaga CF. On the 23rd of August 2015, he made his debut for the club, starting in a 1-0 home win over Athletic Bilbao. He scored his first goal for the team against Levante UD in a 2-0 defeat on 6th January 2015, the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey also at La Rosaleda Stadium. He made a total of 56 appearances for the club.

Braga

On 5th July 2016, he was loaned to S.C. Braga for one year and he later joined the club permanently, with Juan Carlos adding two more seasons to his contract to take him through to 2024 in September 2019. In his second and third seasons, he scored 11 and eight goals, respectively, to assist the team to a fourth-place finish.

On May 23, 2021, he completed a 2-0 victory against Benfica in the Taca de Portugal final, and he took over as captain after Fransergio moved to FC Girondins de Bordeaux in 2021-2022. He scored in the opening minute of a 3-2 loss to rivals F.C. on May 15th, Famalicao on the last day, going above 1940s star Mario Laranjo as Braga’s greatest scorer with 93.

He recently extended his contract with the club until June 2028, with his buyout clause staying set at €30 million in April 2023.

International Career

He played for Portugal’s under-20 squad in the 2014 Toulon Tournament, as well as the under-21 team in the 2015 and 2017 UEFA European Championships.

Moreover, he scored in his only appearance in the 2015 competition, in a final runner-up position in the Czech Republic, and earned his first cap for the full side on September 7, 2017, one week before his 20th birthday, replacing William Carvalho early in the second half of a 0-1 home loss to Albania for the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers.

He was again called by Fernando Santos for the upcoming 2022-2023 UEFA Nations League games in May 2022, after almost eight years in the international wilderness, playing 20 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Spain in Seville on 2nd June and scoring for his team’s goal.

He was picked to the final team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar in November. As the country had already qualified from their group, he started the final game, starting a 2-1 loss to South Korea in Al Rayyan on a cross from Diogo Dalot.
