Early Life

Jonathan Price was born on June 1, 1947, in Carmel, Flintshire, Wales. He is 76 years old and is under the astrological sign, Gemini. He holds Welsh nationality and is popular as Sir Jonathan Pryce CBE and his birthname is John Price.

His father’s name is Isaac Price and his mother’s name is Margaret Ellen. His father is a former coal miner who ran a small general grocery shop along with his mother. He also has two older sisters but their names are unknown at the moment. They all were raised as Welsh Presbyterians.

Regarding Price’s educational background and qualifications, he attended Holywell Grammar School. Then, when he was 16 years old, he went to art college before he began training to be a teacher at Edge Hill College (now Edge Hill University) in Ormskirk, Lancashire.

During his studying time, he also went on to take part in a college theatre production and applied to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). Subsequently, he was able to receive a scholarship to RADA, graduating in 1971, with Acting (RADA Diploma).

Career and Professional Life

Jonathan Price went on to join the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool after finding RADA a bit strict and being told he could only play villains on Z-Cars. Later on, he was able to become its artistic director as well. He even performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Nottingham Playhouse.

Price was able to make his first screen appearance in a minor role in “Fire & Brimstone” on Doomwatch to get his Equity card. He then went on to star in two TV films: Daft as a Brush and Playthings.

And, after leaving Everyman, he was able to join Sir Richard Eyre at the Nottingham Playhouse and star in Trevor Griffiths’ play “Comedians”. Then, in the year 1976, he took the role to Broadway and was able to win a Tony Award for it. He even was able to make his film debut in “Voyage of the Damned”.

Likewise, in the year 1980, Price’s portrayal of Hamlet at the Royal Court Theatre was able to earn him an Olivier Award, and hailed as the definitive Hamlet of his generation. In that same year, he also had a significant role as Zarniwoop in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy radio series. He even went on to appear in the film Breaking Glass and Something Wicked This Way Comes in 1983.

Jonathan’s breakthrough was with his role as Sam Lowry in the film “Brazil”. He then appeared in “The Doctor and the Devils” and “Haunted Honeymoon”. Also, on stage, he was able to gain recognition as “Trigorin in The Seagull” and play the lead in “Macbeth”. He went on to star in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Uncle Vanya. He was able to make a successful return to the stage in Miss Saigon and win awards in England.

Price went on to take on a non-musical stage role in a play, “A Reckoning” in April 2003. Around the same time, he also was able to appear in the action-adventure film “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” as Governor Weatherby Swann. He later went on to reprise the role in the sequels.

And, after Pirates, he was able to appear in some awesome movies such as What a Girl Wants, De-Lovely, The Brothers Grimm, and The Goat or Who is Sylvia? Also, he lent his voice to the French animated film “Renaissance” and even got to be the lead in the BBC serial “Sherlock Holmes” and the “Baker Street Irregulars”.

John Price was able to join “Game of Thrones” in Season 5 as the High Sparrow and even admitted that he initially had doubts about “sword and sorcery” shows. He appeared at The Globe Theatre in The Merchant of Venice alongside his real-life daughter Phoebe. And in the year 2018, he went on to portray Don Quixote in Terry Gilliam’s “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote”.

Furthermore, Jonathan Price was able to star in “The Height of the Storm” in the year 2018. In the acclaimed film The Two Popes, he went on to portray Pope Francis alongside Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict XVI.
