David Neres joined So Paulo’s youth setup in September 2007, when he was 10 years old. After appearing consistently in that year’s U-20 Copa Libertadores, he had a shoulder injury in February 2016 that sidelined him for months.
He was promoted to the senior team by manager Ricardo Gomes in August 2016. On 17 October 2016, he made his senior debut, coming on in as a substitute in a 2-1 win for the club. He scored his first goal in a 2-0 home win over Ponte Preta on October 22, 2016. Fourteen days later, he scored his second goal, this time in a 4-0 home win over local rival Corinthians.
Ajax
He moved to the Dutch club Ajax for a reported fee of €12 million on the 30th of January 2017. On the 26th of February 2017, he made his debut for the club against Heracles Almelo, on 26th of February.
He was a member of Ajax’s side that won the UEFA Europa League that year. In his debut season with the club, he scored three goals in eight league games. Additionally, in his second season with the club, he had 14 goals and 13 assists in 32 league games.
Later, in the 2017-18 season, he was named Ajax’s Most Valuable Player. Moreover, he had a good season in the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League, leading his club to the semi-finals. In the semifinals, Ajax was defeated by English team Tottenham Hotspur.

For the club, he made his debut on August 2, providing two assists to Gonçalo Ramos in the 4–1 home win over Midtjylland in the 1st leg of the 2022–23 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.
He scored his first goal for the club on August 23, and provided an assist in the 3–0 home win over Dynamo Kyiv in the 2nd leg of the 2022–23 UEFA Champions League play-off round, helping his side qualify for the tournament. Seven days later, he scored his first Primeira Liga goal in a 3-2 home win over Paços de Ferreira, giving him six goals in six games.
International Career
He began his international career with the Brazil U20 team. Following Vinicius Junior’s injury, he was called up to the Brazilian senior squad for the first time in March 2019. On March 26, 2019, he made his senior national team debut against the Czech Republic in a friendly. He scored in his first game against the Czech Republic, contributing to two goals in the 3–1 win.
