However, the company faced legal challenges and accusations of spamming. In 2003, Microsoft filed a lawsuit against Richter and his company for allegedly sending spam emails to Hotmail users. This lawsuit resulted in a significant settlement, in which Richter agreed to pay damages and abide by certain anti-spam practices.
He used to be one of the top 100 spammers on the ROKSO list, but he is no longer on it. His firm used to send 100 million emails every day. He claims to have sold 40,000 decks of Iraqi playing cards before they were even produced in one of the most famous emails in 2003. On March 30, 2004, he was interviewed by Rob Corddry on The Daily Show.
His firm, Media Breakaway, was sued by the famous social networking website MySpace in January 2007 for allegedly obtaining access to members’ accounts and exploiting them to send millions of spam messages posing as users’ MySpace “friends.”
On June 16, 2008, an arbitrator awarded MySpace $4.8 million in damages and $1.2 million in attorney’s costs to “spam king” Scott Richter and his Web marketing firm, Media Breakaway LLC, of Westminster, Colo., “for barraging MySpace members with unsolicited advertisements.” The reward was equal to 5% of the amount requested by MySpace.
