Professional Life

In the 1980s, Guy Penrod started working as a studio singer. Also, backing up voices such as Carman, Steve Green, Amy Grant, James Ingram, Michael W. Smith, Phillips, Craig & Dean.

Besides that, he was also a member of the Christ Church Choir. He met Bill Gaither for the first time, during his years in the studio. In the mid-1990s, he appeared on TNN’s Music City Tonight as a background singer.

In 1989, he was a lead vocal on a Brentwood cassette titled “Following The Sun – Island Music For Believers”. He was recognized worldwide after his position with the Gaither Vocal Band in 1994.

All over the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia, he has performed in Gaither Homecoming concerts. He performed a duet with the singer Glen Payne on their Farewell Celebration video, in 1999.

Moreover, he performed for the grand opening of Jerry Falwell’s new Thomas Road Baptist Church. On August 6, 2005, his album, The Best of Guy Penrod, reached No. 92 on the Billboard 200.

There was an announcement made by Bill Gaither that Penrod would be leaving the Gaither Vocal Band. And, he will be starting a solo career, on January 13, 2009. Finally, he released his debut solo album, Breathe Deep, in August 2009.

Hence, in 2011, he was inducted into the Texas Gospel Music Hall of Fame. The album also became the top-selling southern gospel album of 2012.  Therefore, he became the new host of Gospel Music Showcase, in 2012. In 2013, he won “Soloist of the Year” from the National Quartet Convention. 

Similarly, he came up with his 3rd solo project titled Worship in May 2014. He again released his first solo Christmas project entitled “Christmas, in September 2014.  In January 2016, the singer released his first solo DVD entitled Live: Hymns & Worship. At the Faith Freedom & Future Inaugural Ball hosted by the Family Research Council, he was a featured performer.

Hence, he returned with an album entitled Classics, in March 2017. As a guest artist, he has often appeared on the stage of the “Grand Ole Opry”. with his 7th solo release, he reached back into the well of beloved hymns. Similarly, in February 2018, Blessed Assurance was released. Thus, the album includes, him singing 12 newly recorded hymns featuring his signature country sound.
