In October 2016, one month before Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in the United States presidential election, Wikileaks revealed a memo outlining how Clinton’s team could persuade Haberman to place sympathetic pieces in Politico. However, subsequent pieces by Haberman about Clinton were far more scathing than the campaign had hoped for.
Similarly, she has been chastised for using a double standard in her reporting on the controversies involving the two presidential contenders in the 2016 election. Haberman and the New York Times allegedly covered Hillary Clinton’s email crisis far more extensively than the multiple controversies involving her rival Donald Trump, including sexual misconduct charges.

She published a book about Trump’s presidency named “Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America” in the year 2022. CNN leaked an excerpt ahead of its release, revealing that Trump intended to just stay in the White House after his November 2020 election loss.
According to a Guardian review of the book, she is “the New York Times’ Trump whisperer,” and the book contains “much more than 600 pages of context, scoop, and drama….it gives Trump and those close to him plenty of voice – and rope.” The book debuted at number one on The New York Times nonfiction best-seller list for the week ending October 8, 2022.
