Mohammed Amer

Mohammed Amer is a well-known Palestinian-American stand-up comedian and writer. Mohammed Ameris is widely known for his Netflix comedy special “Mo Amer: The Vagabond,” and his role as one-third of the comedy trio “Allah Made Me Funny.”

Early Life

On the 24th of July 1981, Mohammed Amer was born in Kuwait. His full name is Mohammed Mustafa Amer and holds American nationality. In the year 2009, he became a citizen of the United States. According to the astrological chart, he has a birth sign of Leo and practices Islam religion. Additionally, he belongs to the Palestinian ethnicity and he is currently 42 years old.

He is the youngest of six children while his siblings’ names are unknown. In addition, his father worked as an engineer for the Kuwait Oil Company by profession. Additionally, his parents’ names are still unknown at the moment.

He went to a British school in Kuwait and learned English with a British accent. During the Gulf War, he, his sister Haifa, his brother, and his mother fled Kuwait when he was nine years old. They immigrated to America and settled in Houston, Texas. He was assigned to an ESL class as the only student who spoke English.

Moreover, he attended Piney Point Elementary School while his older brothers studied abroad. His father died in 1995 when he was 14 years old. Omar, one of his brothers, is a pilot, and Amer (who later changed the family name to Najjar) has a Ph.D. in biochemistry.

Professional Career

When Mohammed Amer was ten years old, his older brother took him to see Bill Cosby perform at the Houston Astrodome. He discovered stand-up comedy at a Texas rodeo when he was 14 years old.

Later, he began performing stand-up comedy by impersonating family members and developed it over a few years in the comedy club scene. Following that, he worked as many comedy clubs in Houston as he could to hone his act while also working a day job at a flag manufacturing company owned by a family friend.

In June 1999, he competed in Houston’s Funniest Person Contest and advanced to the finals. At the age of 19, he was flown out to perform for US troops stationed abroad, becoming the first and only Arab-American refugee comic to perform for US and coalition troops overseas.

He has toured 27 countries across five continents, including Germany, Italy, Sicily, Japan, Korea, and Bahrain. He appeared at The Comedy Festival in Las Vegas in 2004. In April 2007, he performed at the Royal Albert Hall for the Islamic Relief Evening of Inspiration, which was organized by Islamic Relief.

He performed at the Islam Expo in Olympia, London, in July 2008. In October 2008, he performed at the Islam Channel-organized Global Peace and Unity event at the ExCeL Exhibition Centre in London.

Continued his career success

He has performed at sold-out shows around the world with Allah Made Me Funny, including the Royal Albert Hall and Hammersmith Apollo in London, the Acer Arena in Sydney, the Nelson Mandela Theatre in Johannesburg, the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, as well as the Malmö Arts Festival in Sweden, the Amman Stand-up Comedy Festival in Jordan, and the World’s Funniest Island Festival in Australia. He has appeared on television and radio, including NPR, the BBC, and CNN.

Additionally, he has also appeared on television, starred in independent films, and been interviewed by over 100 major international media outlets, including The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and The Guardian.

Furthermore, he was the only Arab-American comedian to appear on Al-Bernameg alongside Bassem Youssef (The Daily Show of Egypt). He appeared on the interfaith special “What’s So Funny About Religion?” in June 2013.

Working with long-time standup collaborator Azhar Usman, he created his first solo feature-length documentary-comedy special, which he co-produced through their jointly owned production entity, Kalijaga Media LLC.

On May 3, 2015, he taped his one-hour special “Legally Homeless” at the Warner Theatre, which was presented by Live Nation Comedy. He was the first Arab-American to have his own one-hour nationally televised stand-up special.

Recent Career

From August 10 to 13, 2015, he performed four nights of stand-up comedy in Ramallah, West Bank, alongside Bob Alper and Ahmed Ahmed. He made his network television debut in the United States on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” in March 2017. He appeared in the Hulu show “Ramy” in 2018.

Moreover, he is currently in the second season of Ramy. On June 27, 2018, he filmed his first Netflix comedy special at Austin’s Paramount Theatre. The film was released on Netflix as “Mo Amer: The Vagabond” the same year. He created and starred in a new Netflix TV series called “Mo,” which premiered in August 2022.
