Early Life

Brent Smith had a high school band called Blind Thought before fronting the rock band Shinedown and later was the lead singer in a band called Dreve, which Atlantic Records had signed. He was forced by Atlantic Records to either find another band or lose his record deal. He then traveled to Los Angeles, California, to work with renowned producer Desmond Child.
Atlantic dropped the band shortly after their return to Knoxville, Tennessee, but kept Smith. Shinedown was formed shortly after. Atlantic Records quickly signed him to a developmental contract. Smith relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, in 2001, and began working on the project.
Shinedown’s debut album, “Leave a Whisper,” was released on the 27th of May 2003 and quickly gained popularity with hits like “Fly from the Inside” and “45.” The album’s success laid the foundation for their subsequent releases.

Since then, the band has released six more studio albums: “Us and Them” (2005), “The Sound of Madness” (2008), “Amaryllis” (2012), “Threat to Survival” (2015), “Attention Attention” (2018), and “Planet Zero “(2022). Smith and Zach Myers launched Smith & Myers, an acoustic side project, in the year 2014.
According to an interview with Wes Styles of the 97.7 WQLZ radio station, the band began recording their sixth album in early 2016. On May 4, 2018, the album “Attention Attention” was released. The album’s first single, ‘Devil,’ was released on March 7, 2018.
Brent was presented with a key to Knox County on August 28th, 2022 at a concert in his hometown Knoxville, Tennessee by former wrestler and current Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs.
