Swapna Barman is a heptathlete from India. Swapna Barman won the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games and placed first in the Heptathlon at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships.
Early Life
Swapna Barman was born on the 29th of October 1996, in Ghoshpara, Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, India. She holds an Indian nationality while she practices the Hindu religion.
Currently, she is 27 years old and has a birth sign of Scorpio. She belongs to the Kshatriya caste.
Barman was born into a poor Rajbongshi family. She was born to her parents; Panchanan Barman and Basana Barman. Her father is a rickshaw puller and her mother worked in a tea estate.
Sadly, her father was bedridden after having suffered a stroke in 2013. She grew up with her brother and two sisters whose names are unknown at the moment.

Moving on to her academics, she went to Charuchandra College, Kolkata after completing high school.
Professional Career
From her childhood days, Swapna Barman was interested in sports. When she first approached her coach, Subhash Sarkar, for high jump training, he turned her down. He was also looking for athletes from other sports. Barman’s high jump performance was so strong that he changed his mind and chose her for training.
In 2014, Barman finished fifth at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. In 2016, she got a 1.5 lakh scholarship in recognition of her talent. She finished first in the Heptathlon at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar’s Kalinga Stadium. Moreover, she also won gold at the 2017 Patiala Federation Cup.
Recent Career
She won gold in the women’s heptathlon (100m, High Jump, 200m, Shot Put, Javelin Throw, Long Jump, and 800m) at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, increasing India’s medal tally in the Asian Games.
Further, she was the first Indian heptathlete to win gold at the Asian Games. After winning the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games, the Government of West Bengal rewarded her ₹10 lakh.
She lost funding in 2020 but stated that she would continue to train at her home in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal.
In addition, she won gold in the heptathlon at the 2021 Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships, and she competed in the heptathlon at the National Games in 2022. She won an unexpected gold medal when she broke the high jump games record of 1.83m.
This Indian athlete also took first in the javelin and the 100m hurdles. She won gold in the heptathlon and hinted that if she had a sponsor for some support staff, she would have scored even higher.

In her heptathlete career, she has been able to earn several games and awards. Till now, she has earned three gold medals and one silver medal competing in several tournaments. In 2019, she was also awarded the Arjuna Award.
