Sean Wainui

Sean Wainui is a late New Zealand rugby union player. Sean Wainui played from the wing and occasionally center position at Taranaki Rugby Football Union and the Chiefs. Meanwhile, he has also represented the New Zealand U20 international team in 2015 and the Maori international team, the Māori All Blacks.

Early Life

Sean Wainui was born on the 23rd of October 1995, in Whatatutu, New Zealand. He held New Zealand nationality and followed the Christian religion. Meanwhile, he belongs to a mixed ethnicity. At the age of 25 years old, he passed away and had a birth sign of Pisces.

He was born and raised in a well-settled family in Whatatutu. His parent was very supportive of their son’s profession. Wainui, a former Takapuna Grammar Prefect, and 1st XV Captain, represented New Zealand on the international stage after representing the Champion New Zealand team in the Under 20 Rugby World Cup in Italy. The team defeated England 21-16 to win the championship. In addition, he attended St Peter’s College, and is unclear whether he has completed his graduation or not.

Death

On the 18th of October 2021, this 25-year-old rugby player died in a car crash. Furthermore, because of his high speed, his car collided with a tree, and he died at 7:50 p.m. in McLaren Falls, New Zealand.

Professional Career

After completing his high school education, Sean Wainui was contracted by the Taranaki Rugby Football Union. He was a member of Taranaki’s national provincial championship squad in his first year out of school in 2014. Coach Colin Cooper spotted him and he signed with Taranaki at the age of 18 after an impressive season not only for his New Plymouth Old Boys club but also for the Chiefs development side.

He made his Taranaki debut in the 2014 ITM Cup competition, coming on as a substitute against Waikato. The following year, he made nine appearances, including five starts, and scored three tries in Super Rugby matches for the province. He appeared in 49 Taranaki games and scored 15 tries between 2014 and 2020.

After impressing in the center and wing positions for Taranaki, he was signed by the Super Rugby franchise the Crusaders in 2015. He made his Crusaders debut in round one of the 2016 Super Rugby competition, starting outside center against the Chiefs.

He signed with the Chiefs before the 2018 Super Rugby season. Moreover, he had made 44 appearances for the club and scored 18 tries by the end of the 2021 Super Rugby season. He became the first player in Super Rugby history to score five tries in a single match on June 12, 2021, against the Waratahs in a 40-7 victory. Moreover, he announced on Instagram on May 27, 2021, that he had signed with Bay of Plenty for the 2021 NPC.

International Career

Wainui was called up to the New Zealand U-20 team in 2015 at the age of 19. Even though Wainui, then 19, had only played a few matches for Taranaki, Colin Cooper, the Mori All Blacks coach, chose him for the 2015 tour to Fiji, where he played against the national team and then against the specially made New Zealand Barbarians. He was capped ten times in total.

Awards

During his school year, he has managed to earn a couple of awards and recognitions. Moreover, he was awarded North Harbour’s 2013 Māori Colts Senior Player of the Year whilst still in school. In addition, he also received the NPOB Club Award.
