Career and Professional Life

Moving on to his career, Brennan played as a halfback for the University of Notre Dame’s football team from 1945 to 1948. In 1946, he played a key role in helping Notre Dame win the national championship. He scored the game-winning touchdown against Army, which ended their 25-game winning streak.

Similarly, in 1947, he again played a significant role in Notre Dame’s national championship victory. In his senior season in 1948, he served as the team captain and was named an All-American. He led the team in rushing and receiving yards and helped Notre Dame to a 9-0-1 record.

Furthermore, in 1951, he began his coaching career as an assistant at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago. From 1952 to 1953, he served as an assistant coach at the University of Miami under head coach Andy Gustafson. In 1954, at the age of 25, he returned to Notre Dame as the head football coach, succeeding Frank Leahy.

During his five-year tenure as head coach from 1954 to 1958, he had a record of 32 wins, 18 losses, and no ties. He led the team to two bowl game appearances, the 1954 Cotton Bowl and the 1957 Sugar Bowl. While his teams did not win any national championships, they finished ranked in the top 10 nationally in three out of his five seasons as head coach.

Additionally, after leaving Notre Dame in 1958, he transitioned to a career in the business world. He worked in various executive positions, including serving as the president and CEO of Electronic Specialty Company in South Bend, Indiana.
