Elena was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender on March 9, 2021, while Wayne was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping Sarah Everard. However, Elena was eventually released on bail.
Sarah Everard murder case
Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old woman, was abducted in South London, England, on the evening of March 3, 2021, while walking home from a friend’s house near Clapham Common. Off-duty Metropolitan Police constable Wayne Couzens stopped her, identified himself as a police officer, handcuffed her, and drove her to near Dover, where he raped and strangled her.

Wayne burned her body and buried her ashes in a nearby pond. He was arrested in Deal, Kent, on March 9, 2021, first on suspicion of Everard’s kidnapping and later on suspicion of her murder. He was charged with her kidnapping and murder after her remains were discovered in woodland near Ashford, Kent. The murder sparked vigils for Everard, prompting a contentious police response and four arrests for violating COVID-19 regulations.
Wayne pleaded guilty to Everard’s kidnapping, rape, and murder, and was sentenced to life in prison with a whole life order on September 30, 2021. The incident sparked widespread debate in the UK about police accountability and women’s safety.
