Hunter won Georgia Player of the Year honors from MaxPreps after making 51 tackles, eight interceptions, and 137 catches for 1,746 yards and 24 touchdowns as a junior.
Additionally, he set single-season records for receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns in Gwinnett County. He did this while leading the Eagles to a 12-3 record and a spot in the Class 7A state championship game. He committed to the Seminoles on March 3, 2020, one day after his first visit to Florida State, where he had received a scholarship in November 2019. In addition to other schools’ offers, he rejected those from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, and Oklahoma.
In an unprecedented move, Hunter switched his commitment to the Jackson State Tigers, coached by Florida State alumnus Deion Sanders, on December 15, 2021. The previous month, on November 20, he had visited the school and witnessed their sold-out Soul Bowl victory. Hunter, the top recruit in the country, signed with an HBCU or an FCS program, making history as the first five-star recruit to do so. According to Sports Illustrated’s Dustin Lewis, it was “likely the most shocking decision in the history of college football recruiting,” and according to 247Sports.com’s Steve Wiltfong, it was “the biggest signing day moment in the history of college football.”
College Career
In the first-ever nationally televised HBCU spring game, Hunter had two receiving touchdowns and two interceptions against Jackson State. On November 12, 2022, Hunter made his first interception and a collegiate touchdown against Alabama A&M. Hunter played in seven games as a freshman and recorded 15 total tackles, nine pass breakups, two interceptions, one recovered fumble, and one defensive touchdown. He also added 14 receptions for 141 yards and two touchdowns while playing offense. It was widely reported that Hunter would probably join the program after Deion Sanders left Jackson State to become the head coach at the University of Colorado. Hunter accessed the transfer portal on December 19. Two days later, he made his transfer to Colorado official.
