Slaviša Jokanović began his professional playing career at FK Novi Sad in Yugoslavia (now Serbia) in 1986. He then moved to FK Vojvodina in 1989, where he spent four seasons and won two Yugoslav First League titles. In 1994, he joined Deportivo de La Coruña in Spain, but his time at the club was limited due to injuries.

After his stint in Spain, he returned to Yugoslavia and played for several clubs, including Real Oviedo, Tenerife, and Deportivo Alavés. In 2000, he joined Chelsea FC in England, playing under manager Gianluca Vialli. However, he struggled to establish himself in the Chelsea team and left the club after a single season.

He then moved to Queens Park Rangers (QPR) in 2001, where he played for two seasons before retiring from professional football in 2003. Throughout his career, Jokanović represented the Yugoslavia national team, earning a total of 64 caps and scoring 10 goals. He participated in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euro 2000 with Yugoslavia.

Managerial Career

Following his retirement as a player, Jokanović transitioned into football management. He started his managerial career in 2007, taking charge of Partizan Belgrade. He led the team to two Serbian SuperLiga titles in 2008 and 2009. Jokanović then had managerial stints at clubs such as Muangthong United in Thailand and Levski Sofia in Bulgaria.

However, he is perhaps best known for his successful spells at two English clubs. He managed Watford FC from 2014 to 2015 and guided them to promotion from the Championship to the Premier League. Moreover, he then moved to Fulham FC in 2015 and achieved another promotion to the Premier League with them in the 2017-2018 season.

Meanwhile, in June 2019, he was appointed at Qatari club Al-Gharafa SC, for a two-year deal and stayed until the 2021 season. In his first year in the Stars League, he was nominated for Manager of the Season. After finishing his contract with the Al-Gharafa SC, he was appointed by newly relegated Sheffield United in May 2021 on a three-year deal, becoming the club’s first manager from overseas. Moreover, he was fired on 25 November, having won six of 19 Championship games.

In June 2022, he signed a contract with Russian Premier League club FC Dynamo Moscow for the upcoming season, with the option of two further years depending on his performance. On May 14, 2023, with Dynamo in seventh place and a 0-3 home loss to FC Akhmat Grozny, he was fired by the team.

As a former player, manager, and as individual, he has won several awards and recognitions. As an individual, he was named the EFL Championship Manager of the Month in April 2015, and April 2018. Similarly, he was named Thailand Premier League Coach of the Year: in 2012.
