Professional Career

At a young age, Shane Wright began making waves in the hockey world. He played minor hockey in the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) for the Don Mills Flyers. There, he showcased his talent and emerged as a dominant player. In the 2018-2019 season, he shattered records by scoring 66 goals and 84 assists for a total of 150 points in just 72 games, leading the Flyers to an OHL Cup championship.

Due to his exceptional performance, Wright was granted exceptional player status by Hockey Canada, allowing him to be eligible for the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) draft at the age of 15. He was subsequently selected first overall by the Kingston Frontenacs in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection.

In his rookie season with the Kingston Frontenacs, he continued to impress. He finished the 2019-2020 campaign with 39 goals and 27 assists for a total of 66 points in 58 games, earning him the OHL Rookie of the Year award. He became the first exceptional-status player to win the award. The 2020-21 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving Wright without a league to play in.

Rejoined Frontenacs and traded to Windsor Spitfires

For the 2021-22 season, he rejoined the Frontenacs. On October 8, 2021, he was named team captain, making him the OHL’s youngest captain in history. He finished the regular season with 32 goals and 62 assists, both of which were significantly higher than in his debut season.

He was sent back to the OHL by Kraken management for the second half of the 2022-23 season after spending the fall of 2022 playing in the NHL, AHL, and the World Junior Championships. On the 9th of January 2023, he was traded to the Windsor Spitfires in exchange for Ethan Miedema, Gavin McCarthy, five draft picks, and two additional conditional draft picks.

He appeared in twenty games during the regular season, tallying 15 goals and 22 assists as the Spitfires finished first in the Western Conference and advanced to the first round of the playoffs against the Kitchener Rangers. Moreover, he had one goal and two assists in four playoff games before being defeated by the Rangers.

2022 NHL Entry Draft

This player signed a three-year entry-level contract with Seattle Kraken on the 13th of July 2022 worth $2.85 million over three years. On the 12th of October 2022, he played 6:14 in his NHL debut in a 5–4 overtime loss to the Anaheim Ducks. He was a healthy scratch for the next two games after his debut before returning to the lineup on October 17.

He got his first NHL point, an assist, in an overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues on October 19. Following five consecutive games as a healthy scratch, the Kraken used a rule loophole to send this player to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds, for a conditioning stint.

This avoided the requirement that Wright return to major junior. After four goals in five AHL games, he returned to the Kraken lineup on December 6, scoring his first NHL goal in a 4-2 loss to the Canadiens, a result widely described as “poetic.” Wright was returned to the OHL by the Kraken after competing with Team Canada. He was reassigned to the Firebirds in April 2023 after his OHL team, the Windsor Spitfires, were eliminated in the playoffs.

International career

At the 2021 IIHF World U18 Championships, he made his international debut with Team Canada’s U18 roster, finishing second in the tournament scoring race and scoring two goals in the final against Team Russia to help Team Canada win the gold medal. Later that year, he was named to the national U20 team for the 2022 World Junior Championships, but the tournament was canceled due to the Omicron variant.

The Seattle Kraken loaned Wright to Team Canada in advance of the 2023 World Junior Championships in Moncton and Halifax. On December 18, this man was named captain of the tournament team. During the tournament, he had four goals and three assists in seven games, helping the team to a gold medal. He received widespread acclaim for his performance in the gold medal game against Team Czechia, which took place on his birthday.
