In the Yankees farm system, Aune played minor-league baseball for six seasons. Twenty home runs and 148 RBIs were totals he attained while playing in the minor leagues. Aune had a career batting average of 226 and was released by the Tampa Yankees at the end of the 2017 season after bouncing around several High-A and Class-A teams and switching from shortstop to outfielder.

College Career

North Texas

Aune, then 24 years old, signed up for the Arkansas Razorbacks’ 2018 spring practice months after being released by the Yankees. Despite enrolling, he decided to transfer to North Texas after being persuaded by the crowded quarterback room.

2018-2020

He began his studies at North Texas in 2018, sitting out the first year. Austin played two quarterback appearances in 2019 as the backup quarterback to Jason Bean and Mason Fine, completing 4 of 5 passes for 136 yards. He supported Bean in 2020, appearing eight times and starting three games.

2021

Aune began the year as junior transfer Jace Ruder’s backup, but after week five, he took over. He guided the Mean Green from a 1-3 start to a 6-6 record and bowl eligibility, including an unexpected victory over #22 UTSA, before falling to the Miami RedHawks in the 2021 Frisco Football Classic.

2022

Aune led the Mean Green to a 7-5 record and was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week in week zero of the 2022 season while playing against a crowded quarterback roster that included Memphis transfer, Grant Gunnell.

Aune surpassed his former teammate Mason Fine’s record of 31 touchdown passes in a season during the 2022 Conference USA Championship Game. In the final game of his career, Aune lost 32-35 in the 2022 Frisco Bowl despite throwing for 238 yards and a touchdown. Aune declared for the 2023 NFL Draft following the game.

Aune redeclared for the upcoming NFL Draft on January 2, 2023, and withdrew from the transfer portal the same day.
