His father was also an inventor and entrepreneur who founded the company, Ronco. He held an American nationality and practiced Christianity. He belonged to the Caucasian ethnicity.
Popeil grew up in Chicago, Illinois, where he attended high school. He was interested in inventing and entrepreneurship from a young age, and he began selling products through mail-order catalogs while still in his teens.
