Paula Lev, a principal of New York City’s High School for Law principle and Public Service made the headline for allegedly discriminating against white teachers. According to an online website, Paula Lev’s nationality is Dominican, and according to her nationality, she was born in the Dominican Republic. She began working as an adjunct instructor at the New York Institute of Technology in 2015. In February 2020, she was named principal of the George Washington Educational Campus’s High School for Law and Public Service.
Complaints against Lev
Employees have also filed complaints against Lev for altering the concepts of equity and anti-racism, causing unrest at the school before the complaint. The principal received criticism for the first time in February 2021, when teacher and union chapter leader Nick Bacon filed a routine grievance about a scheduling issue.
According to reports, the school’s faculty and non-teaching staff members are White, Jewish, Greek, Black, Hispanic, and Asian. Staffers who felt insulted by Lev’s question to Bacon complained to District Superintendent Manny Ramirez. Ramirez later admitted in a meeting that Lev was “inappropriate.”
Though Lev later apologized to Bacon for remarking in front of other staff members, she insisted he read Robin DiAngelo’s book “White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism.” She also stated that her comments reflected her true feelings.
After District Superintendent Ramirez failed to resolve the issue satisfactorily, staffers approached Chancellor Meisha Porter in July. Previously, over 40 faculty members gave a vote of no confidence in Lev.
“With almost the entire 40+ membership voting, including both tenured and untenured teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service professionals, 83.3% voted that they no longer have confidence in our principal to lead our school,” according to an email announcing the vote.

Lev was awarded the 2018 Outstanding School Administrator Award, as well as a scholarship from the National Excellence In School Leadership Initiative (NESLI).
