Sean May is a retired American professional basketball player and currently an assistant basketball coach. Sean May is currently an assistant coach for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns.
Early Life
Sean May was on the 4th of April 1984, in Chicago, Illinois, in the United States of America. As of 2024, he is 39 years old and holds American citizenship. Education and College Career
In terms of his educational qualification, he attended Bloomington High School North. After completing his high school education, he enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During that time, he played college basketball for the North Carolina Tar Heels from 2003 to 2005.
He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2005 NCAA Tournament in his junior season after helping Carolina win its fourth national championship. He had 26 points on 10-11 shooting and 10 rebounds in a 75-70 win over the University of Illinois. In August 2009, he graduated from the University of North Carolina with a B.A. in African-American studies.
Professional Career
Sean May was selected by the Charlotte Bobcats with the 13th overall pick in the 2005 NBA draft. He played for the Bobcats from 2005 to 2009.
Moreover, he was known for his scoring and rebounding ability during his time with the team, particularly in the post. He has some productive seasons with the Bobcats, including the 2006-07 season where he averaged 11.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.
However, he also struggled with injuries throughout his career, which limited his playing time and effectiveness on the court. In the year 2009, the Bobcats traded May to the Sacramento Kings, where he played for one season before being waived.
Sacramento Kings
He played the 2009-2010 NBA season for the Kings, appearing in 24 games during the season, starting in two of them. In addition, he averaged 3.3 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 0.4 assists per game, shooting 39.4% from the field and 62.5% from the free-throw line.
He played an average of 9.9 minutes per game, and his best performance came on November 6, 2009, when he scored 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in a game against the New Orleans Hornets.
However, May struggled with injuries throughout the season, including a knee injury that caused him to miss several games. He was waived by the Kings in February 2010 and did not play in the NBA again after that season.
International Career
In addition, he averaged 10.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game in the EuroLeague while shooting 57.1% from the field and 73.9% from the free-throw line. He also played in the Turkish Basketball League (TBL) for Fenerbahçe Ülker, averaging 9.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.
May’s performances helped Fenerbahçe Ülker reach the finals of the TBL, but they lost to Beşiktaş Milangaz in the championship series. Despite the loss, he was named to the All-TBL First Team for his outstanding play throughout the season. Moreover, he signed a two-year deal with Paris-Levallois Basket of Franc on the 18th of July 2012.
Moreover, he only played one game during the 2013-2014 season due to his injury. Additionally, he signed with SPO Rouen Basket on the 24th of November 2014. However, he left the Rouen on the 30th of December 2014 and signed with Orléans Loiret Basket for the rest of the season.
As a coach
After retiring from playing professional basketball in 2013, May began his coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He spent three seasons as an assistant coach under head coach Roy Williams, helping the Tar Heels win the 2017 NCAA Championship.
In 2018, he was named the head coach of the varsity boys’ basketball team at Hough High School in Cornelius, North Carolina. He spent two seasons coaching at Hough, leading the team to a 25-3 record and the second round of the state playoffs in his second season.
In 2020, May was hired as an assistant coach for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, working under head coach Monty Williams. In his first season with the team, the Suns advanced to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in six games.
