Early Life
Halyna Hutchins was born on April 10, 1979, in Horodets, Ukrainian SSR. Additionally, she grew up in Murmansk, Russia, on a Soviet military base in the Arctic. Her parent’s name is still unknown, but her father served in the Soviet Navy. Whereas, she has a sibling named Svetlana Androsovyc.
Education
She was the 1st interested in making movies when she lived at the military base. For her education, she went to the National Agricultural University. Later, he attended Kyiv National University. With a degree in international journalism, she graduated from college.
Death
During the making of the film Rust, she was shot with a prop gun fired by Alec Baldwin on October 21, 2021, at the age of 42. Therefore, film director Joel Souza was seriously injured by the gunshot. Both of them were immediately rushed to the hospital. unfortunately, she was declared dead on arrival.
Career
To focus on filmmaking, taking on roles in production and fashion photography, Halyna Hutchins moved to Los Angeles. In 2006, she was an associate producer for World’s Tallest Man. Thus, it’s a film about Leonid Stadnyk by Wild Pictures; the film premiered on the Discovery Channel.
Moving on, she graduated from UCLA TFT Professional Program in Producing, in 2010. During her journey, she met Bob Primes, a cinematographer, in Los Angeles. By showing her the right path, he encouraged Hutchins to apply to the American Film Institute Conservatory.
In 2013, she was accepted and began studying there for a two-year master’s program. After 2 years, she finally graduated in 2015. As per the sources, Stephen Lighthill mentored her there.
Also, her thesis project, Hidden, was made with director Rayan Farzad. Additionally, it was screened at the LA Shorts Fest, Camerimage International Film Festival, AFI Fest, and the Austin Film Festival.
In the Fox DP Lab program, she was one of the first eight female cinematographers to participate in 2018. Thus, it was established to provide more significant opportunities for women cinematographers.
Finally, she was named one of the “10 up-and-coming directors of photography who are making their mark. It was by an American Cinematographer, in the year 2019.

In Adam Egypt Mortimer’s 2020 film Archenemy, she was the director of photography. Mortimer had said that her “tastes and sensibility of what is cinematic were a huge asset for executing our style” and that “her AFI training and her skill with the math of LUT settings gave us the best texture I’ve found yet in shooting digital”.
Besides that, she has worked on the films Darlin’ (2019), Blindfire (2020), and The Mad Hatter (2021). According to Hollywood.com, she was credited for her cinematographic work on Darlin’. Therefore, the film was highlighted after its feature at the March 2019 South by Southwest Film Festival, in the Narrative Feature Competition.
