Early Life
On the 4th of June 1976, in Butyn, Russian SFSR, the Soviet Union, Alexei Navalny was born. His birth name is Alexei Anatolievich Navalny and he is 47 years old.
In addition, he holds Russian nationality and has his belief in Christianity. Similarly, he has a zodiac sign of Gemini and is of Russian-Ukrainian descent.
Talking about his parents, he is the son of Anatoly Anatolievich Navalny (father) and Lyudmila Navalny (mother). His father is a retired military officer, and now runs a basket-weaving factory in Kobyakovo along with his wife.
He has a younger brother named Oleg Navalnaya. Due to his father’s profession, the family spent their early years moving from one garrison town to another, studying in different schools.
Education and Early Career
Talking about his academic career, he went to Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia and received his degree in 1998. Moreover, he earned his degree in economics from the Finance Academy under the Government of the Russian Federation in the year 2001.
In addition, he spent a semester studying at Yale University as part of its World Fellows program in the year 2010.
Professional Career
Alexei Navalny started his career in law as a lawyer in the late 1990s. During the same years, he joined Yabloko, the Russian United Democratic Party. Afterward, he went on to become deputy chairman of its Moscow branch. But he butted heads with leadership over his nationalist views and was expelled from the party in 2007.
International Recognition
Navalny began a major political campaign in 2011, urging voters not to vote for ‘United Russia’ in the upcoming parliamentary election. Moreover, his political campaign
On July 17, 2013, he registered his mayoral candidate in the mayoral election for Moscow. The next day, he was arrested and sentenced to five years of imprisonment allegedly for defrauding Russian state enterprise Kirovles but was soon released on bail.
A systematic campaign was started against Navalny to negate his chance of winning the 2013 mayoral election. Despite this, he earned 27.24% votes. Afterward, he joined ‘The People Alliance’, which in 2014 was registered as Progress Party.
Presidential Election
On the 13th of December 2016, he announced plans to run for the 2018 presidential election. After this, soon, his cases against him, which were earlier suspended, were opened and the Central Election Commission refused to register him, citing his previous conviction in the Kirovles case.
However, he was unable to participate in the Presidential Election and start protest marches, urging people to boycott the election. Again, he was arrested in May 2018, and sentenced to 30 days imprisonment for organizing illegal demonstrations.
Before the Moscow city Duma election, in July 2019, Navalny was arrested once again, and sentenced to imprisonment for one month.
Assassination Attempt and Imprisonment
In August 2020, he became seriously ill on a flight to Moscow, prompting an emergency landing in the city of Omsk. Eventually, he was admitted to medical care in Berlin, Germany, where it was determined he was poisoned with a Russian-developed Novichok nerve agent.
A month later, he was discharged from the hospital, Navalny teamed with news agencies and the London-based investigative group Bellingcat to pinpoint his would-be assassins from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB)
Eventually, he managed to get one such security agent on the phone. He tricked him into admitting the nerve agent had been applied to the target’s underwear. He was immediately arrested after returning to Moscow in January 2021 for violating the terms of his probation.
In addition, he was sentenced to nine years in a maximum-security prison in March 2022 for embezzling funds from his Anti-Corruption Foundation. He opened an appeal process against the sentence in court on the 17th of May 2022.
According to Navalny, on the 31st of May 2022, he was officially notified about new charges of extremism brought against him, in which he was facing up to an additional 15 years in prison.
Moreover, he was transferred to the maximum security prison IK-6 in Melekhovo, Vladimir Oblast in mid-June 2022.
In early 2021, Navalny got a nomination for a Nobel Peace Prize. Similarly, he was awarded the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 2021.
In addition, he became a World Fellow at Yale University’s World Fellows Program in 2010. In 2022, he released a documentary ” Navalny” which explores his recovery period in Germany following the poisoning and his return to Russia to face incarceration.

Relationship Status
Regarding his personal life, Alexei married his wife Yulia Navalnaya in 2000. His wife is a Russian public figure and an economist. With the marriage, the couple has two kids whose names are Daria Navalnaya and Zahar Navalny.
