From the age of eight to twelve, she competed with another young girl as her partner and attended a class on Saturdays. Her mother took her to a studio in Liverpool because she wanted more competition, and she relocated to South Yorkshire when she was 14 and had the privilege of dancing for two years with British Junior Ballroom Champion Nigel Tiffany there.
She partnered with Sammy Stopford because she had a stronger flair for Latin music. They immediately entered the Professional Latin field of competition. She won The United Kingdom Closed Championship, her first major title when she was 18 years old.
Sammy and Shirley were the ballroom dancing world’s fastest-rising couple. She won an incredible third place at the Professional World Latin Championships a year later. She had amassed all significant titles worldwide by the age of 23.
