He later attributed his mannerisms, speech, and persona to his friendship with Tom Mix’s close buddy Wyatt Earp. Wayne eventually transitioned to supporting roles and made lifelong acquaintances with John Ford, the director who delivered the majority of those parts.
He had a small, uncredited cameo as a guard early in this period in the 1926 movie Bardelys the Magnificent. In the films Brown of Harvard (1926), The Dropkick (1927), Salute (1929), and Columbia’s Maker of Men, Wayne further played football with his USC teammates (filmed in 1930, released in 1931).
