He was drafted in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the San Diego Padres in 2000. He also batted and led his team with 12 doubles. While playing for the Arizona League Padres, he hit 209 with one home run and 15 RBIs.
Later in his career, he transferred to the University of Colorado to play in the major leagues.

In 2004, he was named all-Big 12 and Colorado’s John Mack Award for the quarterback position. He sprained his shoulder during the game against Washington State, which forced him to miss two games.
