Jimmy Butler started his basketball career in his college time. He accepted an athletic scholarship to attend Marquette University, where, as a sophomore in the 2008–09 season, he averaged 5.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per game and recorded a free-throw percentage of 76.8%.

As a junior in 2009-10, he stepped into the starting lineup and averaged 14.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, earning All-Big East Honorable Mention. He averaged 15.7 points per game as a senior in 2010-11, earning All-Big East Honorable Mention for the second year in a row.

After graduating from college, he was selected as the 30th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls. He signed his rookie contract with the Bulls on December 9, 2011. That season saw the fourth and most recent NBA lockout in the league’s history. It began on July 1, 2011, lasted 161 days, and pushed the start of the 2011-12 season from November 1 to December 25.

He appeared in 42 games for the Bulls in his rookie season, averaging 2.6 points per game. Moreover, he participated in three postseason games with the Bulls but did not score a single point. He was on the Bulls’ NBA Summer League roster the following season. In his four games, he averaged 20.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists. His contract was then extended until the 2013-14 season.

On April 25, he set another postseason career-high with 33 points against the Bucks.

In the semi-finals, the Bulls were defeated by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He accepted a five-year, $95 million contract from the Bulls on July 9, 2015. The deal also included a fifth-year player option for him. On February 5, 2016, he suffered a left knee injury during a game against the Denver Nuggets. As a result, he was sidelined for nearly four weeks and missed the 2016 NBA All-Star Game.

On March 14, he made his comeback against the Toronto Raptors. He had a triple-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists in the Bulls’ last game of the season on April 13 against the Philadelphia 76ers. He was outstanding in his final season with the Bulls. On October 27, 2016, he scored a team-high 24 points to help the Bulls win their season-opening against the Boston Celtics. He set a season-best with 40 points against the Los Angeles Lakers on November 20.  At the end of the season, he had played in 76 regular-season games, averaging 23.9 points per game, and six playoff games, averaging 22.7 points per game.

Moreover, he joined the Heat. He made the NBA Finals in his first season with the franchise. This player topped the league in steals in 2021. The Heat reportedly signed him to a four-year, $184 million contract extension on August 7, 2021.
