By writing and co-producing the song Hopeless, Van began his professional career. Thus, he initially worked for singer Dionne Farris. Besides that, he also joined her band on guitar and keyboards.
He met Randy Jackson while working with Farris, who later became Hunt’s manager in 2002.
In 1999, in Love in Stereo, he co-wrote the song with Rahsaan Patterson on his album. Therefore, he also co-wrote with Cree Summer the song, “Mean Sleep” in 1999.
