The Detroit Lions drafted Rodney in the 6th round with the 141st pick in the 1989 NFL Draft. He couldn’t start in the season opener as he got injured in the final preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams.
He finished his rookie season with 8 starts, 1,479 yards, and 5 passing touchdowns. Rodney played 5 seasons for the Lions. He was a free agent and got signed by the Dallas Cowboys on May 3, 1994.
Peete only played 1 season for the Cowboys. Rodney then went on to play 4 seasons for the Philadelphia Eagles. He was traded to the Washington Redskins for a 2000 sixth-round pick on April 28, 1999.
Peete played only 1 season for the Redskins. Rodney then signed with the Oakland Raiders on July 13, 2000. Peete played for 2 seasons with them.
The Carolina Panthers signed Peete on March 28, 2002. Rodney played for the Panthers until 2004.
He retired his career with 1,344 completions in 2,346 attempts, for 16,338 passing yards, 76 passing touchdowns, 92 interceptions, and a passer rating of 73.3. He also had the most NFL career passing yards among quarterbacks from USC, a record that was eventually broken by Carson Palmer.

After retiring, he appeared on the Fox Sports Networks sports talk show The Best Damn Sports Show Period as one of the hosts alongside Chris Rose, John Salley, and Rob Dibble.
In 2019, he also co-hosted the Hallmark Kitten Bowl. He also worked as a host for a radio show that aired in Los Angeles.

Rodney Peete and his wife have founded a non-profit organization named Holly Rod Foundation. Peete and his wife believe in giving back to the community.
After Holly and Rodney’s eldest son, RJ was diagnosed with autism, the foundation was founded.
