During his college graduation, he joined the 2013 NFL Draft where he was able to attend the second round with the 55th pick and was selected by the San Francisco 47ers. He achieved his first career start-up against the Indianapolis Colts in December 2013 and got his first NFL touchdown on November 22, 2015, with a 19-yard pass against the Seattle Seahawks.
Later on, he signed a five-year contract with the 49ers on December 9, 2016. In 2017 the 49ers to Pittsburgh Steelers traded the former Rice Owl where he played against Cleveland Browns and won it. In 2018 he won a grade of 70.2 from pro-Football Focus which was ranked as the 20th highest among the qualifying tight ends. On January 22, 2021, he got his retirement after his 8 seasons in the league.
