Usman joined Real Madrid in 2017 and was assigned to the Real Madrid B team. In 2017-18, he played in 11 games for the reserve team, averaging 11.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game.
Moreover, in 22 Liga EBA games the following season, he averaged 14.6 points, 12.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game for the reserve team.
He made his Real Madrid debut against Miraflores in the Liga ACB, Spain’s first-tier league, on October 28, 2018, becoming the league’s youngest center.

During a run in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he was drafted with the 23rd overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets. He made his 2021 NBA Summer League debut against the Toronto Raptors, going scoreless with six rebounds and one steal in a 92–76 loss.
Furthermore, he officially signed his rookie contract on August 16th. In a 125–119 loss against the Washington Wizards on October 5, he made his preseason debut off the bench with five points and a rebound in six minutes of action.
The Houston Rockets announced on January 26, 2022, that Usman had undergone successful surgery to repair his fractured left wrist andwouldl be out for six to eight weeks.
National team career
At the 2016 FIBA U16 European Championship, he made his junior national team debut. After guiding his team to the gold medal and averaging 16.3 points, 12.4 rebounds, and a tournament-leading 2.9 blocks per game, he was named MVP.
He was a member of Spain’s men’s national basketball team in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2021, which were postponed by a year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
