Previously, Alejandro Gaviria Uribe worked as an engineer at Suramericana de Seguros.
Later, he became an economist at the National Federation of Coffee Growers. Moving on, as head of the division, he went to the National Planning Department.
Moreover, he worked as a researcher for the Inter-American Development Bank. He returned to Colombia as a researcher for Fedesarrollo, in 2000.
He became the Deputy Director of that think tank, in the following year. In 2002, he returned to National Planning and the change of government.

But, this time as Deputy Director of Santiago Montenegro. Until 2004, he was there and he left to pursue academia at the Faculty of Economics. Thus, he went at the Universidad de Los Andes.
Additionally, in the newspaper El Espectador, he was dean of that faculty and a member of the editorial board. In it, he publishes opinion columns.
In August 2012, he was appointed as Minister of Health by President Juan Manuel Santos. Also, in August 2014, appointed as ratified.
In 2018, he finally returned to academic work. Later, he was elected by the Universidad de Los Andes as rector, on May 22, 2019.
Besides, he has written articles, books, and essays on economics, development, and literature. Eventually, he received the Juan Luis Londoño Medal, in 2007.
