Whitney debuted in January 2005, after being taught by WWE Hall of Famer Killer Kowalski. He mostly wrestled for Massachusetts-based independent organizations such as Chaotic Wrestling and Top Rope Promotions.
He competed in an IWF Junior Heavyweight Championship match against champion Sean Royal on May 22, 2005, but lost. Later that day, he also failed to win a fight royal to become the IWF Heavyweight Champion’s number one contender.
In 2005, Whitney made her Chaotic Wrestling debut as “Tommy Penmanship.” On April 1, he was defeated by Fred Sampson in a qualifying match for the Chaotic Wrestling Heavyweight Championship Tournament.
Penmanship paired up with Arch Kincaid in June to challenge the Logan Brothers for the Chaotic Wrestling Tag Team Championship, but they were defeated.
On August 8, Penmanship earned his first championship, the Chaotic Wrestling New England Championship, after defeating Chase del Monte.
He successfully defended it against former del Monte, Jason Blade, and Psycho for half a year before losing it to Psycho at Cold Fury 5.
Penmanship then went a few months without winning a singles bout, losing to Matt Logan and Psycho, but he did win a first-round match in the Lethal Lottery Tournament partnering with Psycho.
Likewise, Penmanship and Psycho qualified for a battle royal to determine the CW Heavyweight Championship’s number one contender, but Luis Ortiz won the match.
Likewise, Penmanship was defeated by Psycho once more at Breaking Point 2006, this time in a Psycho Rules bout with Tommy Dreamer as the special referee. Penmanship defeated Handsome Johnny on May 19 to win the Chaotic Wrestling Heavyweight Championship.

Under the ring name Demarco Whitney, he was defeated by Jamie Noble on the December 17 episode of Velocity. He and Kofi Kingston had a dark match against Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch on the August 25, 2006 episode of Heat.
Whitney signed a developmental deal with WWE and was assigned to Ohio Valley Wrestling on February 4, 2007. On February 21, he made his professional wrestling debut as Tommaso.
Following an accident, he was forced to retire from professional wrestling and became known as Dr. Thomas, Anger Management Specialist, during which time he managed Bolin Services (Charles Evans and Justin LaRouche), who won the OVW tag team championships.
Dr. Thomas would ultimately make his ring debut at Six Flags, tagging with Bolin Services to face Elijah Burke and Cryme Tyme in a 6-man tag match.
Whitney introduced a new gimmick on June 27, 2007, when he began wrestling as a Prodigy while wearing a mask. Whitney terminated his WWE developmental contract on August 9.
Independent circuit (2007–2016)
He returned to the independent circuit in late 2007. Tommaso defeated A.J. Styles and Eddie Edwards to win the MWF Television Championship on September 29.
Ciampa made his debut in Harley Race’s World League Wrestling in September 2008. In October, he competed in the WLW Heavyweight Championship Nine-Man Battle Royal.
Ciampa also unsuccessfully challenged the WLW Tag Team Championship twice: once with Steve Anthony on November 22, 2008, and again with Marc Godeker on March 21, 2009.
Following his return to New England in 2008, Ciampa competed in the ECWA Super 8 Tournament in 2009 and 2010, eventually winning the tournament in 2011 by defeating Adam Cole.
Ciampa debuted for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) on August 30, 2013, as he competed in the 2013 Battle of Los Angeles, losing in the first round to Brian Cage.

Return to WWE
Tommaso Ciampa became part of the NXT Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament on September 2, 2015, despite not being re-signed by WWE.
On September 9, he and his new partner Johnny Gargano proceeded to the second round of the tournament. Ciampa lost a singles bout to Breeze on the September 30 program. On the December 2 episode of NXT, he won against Samoa Joe.
On the January 13, 2016, edition of NXT, Ciampa defeated Danny Burch, and on the February 24, show, he defeated Bull Dempsey. Ciampa won again on March 15 tapings, this time against Jesse Sorensen.
Ciampa made his NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia return on January 27, 2018, assaulting Gargano with a crutch to conclude the show.
On the February 21 episode of NXT, he cost Gargano his NXT Championship battle against Andrade “Cien” Almas, causing Gargano to quit the company as per the pre-match clause.
Ciampa returned to the ring in the main event of NXT TakeOver: New Orleans, but Gargano was defeated in an unofficial match, culminating in Gargano’s reinstatement to NXT.
Their feud would continue over the next few weeks, with them attacking one other and interfering in each other’s bouts, culminating in Ciampa’s victory in a Chicago Street Fight at NXT TakeOver: Chicago II.
Return from injury (2019–2021)
Tommaso Ciampa made his return from injury on the October 2 episode of NXT by confronting Adam Cole, who had become the longest-reigning NXT Champion.
On the October 30 broadcast of NXT, Ciampa protected Matt Riddle and Keith Lee from a brutal attack by The Undisputed Era (Cole, Bobby Fish, Kyle O’Reilly, and Roderick Strong), setting up a WarGames battle between Ciampa’s team and The Undisputed Era.
On November 23, Team Ciampa (Ciampa, Lee, Dominik Dijakovic, and Kevin Owens) beat The Undisputed Era at NXT TakeOver: WarGames.
This resulted in a match between Ciampa and Cole for the NXT Championship at NXT TakeOver: Portland on February 16, 2020, which Cole won when Gargano cost Ciampa the match, reigniting their feud.
Ciampa won the vacant NXT Championship on September 14 after defeating LA Knight, Pete Dunne, and Von Wagner in a fatal four-way match. Moreover, Ciampa successfully defended his championship against Bron Breaker at Halloween Havoc.
Likewise, Ciampa teamed up with Johnny Gargano, LA Knight, and Pete Dunne (as “Team Black & Gold”) to face Breaker, Carmelo Hayes, Grayson Waller, and Tony D’Angelo (as “Team 2.0”) at WarGames, but they were defeated after Breaker pinned Ciampa.
Ciampa lost the championship to Breaker in a rematch at New Year’s Evil, ending his second reign at 112 days.

Tommaso Ciampa and his wife, Jessie Ward, are currently married. In September 2013, the pair married in front of their closest friends and family.
The two met for the first time through their common buddy, professional wrestler Samoa Joe. After that, they began meeting and dating for more than a year before deciding to live together.
