Raisa Smetanina was able to take part in the five Olympics. She represented the Soviet team four times and the Unified Team one time. She was able to win two gold as well as one silver medal at the 1976 Winter Olympics.

This made her become one of the most successful athletes there, along with Rosi Mittermaier of West Germany. Likewise, when she was 39 years old, in the 1992 Winter Olympics, Raisa was able to win a further gold medal.

She competed for the Unified Team in the 4 × 5 km relay which helped her become the first woman to win 10 Winter Olympic medals. Also, she was the oldest woman to win a Winter Olympic gold at that time.

Likewise, Raisa Smetanina also had success winning four golds 20 km, and 4 × 5 km relay, three silvers, and the 4 × 5 km relay, and four bronzes 4 × 5 km relay, 5 km, and 20 km at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships.

She also was able to win three times at the Holmenkollen ski festival, once in the 10 km and twice in the 5 km. Moreover, in the year 1979, she was able to receive the Holmenkollen medal. Smetanin received the “Order of Friendship of Peoples” in the year 1984.
