Early Life and Childhood
Phil was born in Rawtenstall, England in 1987. He celebrates his birthday on January 30. His real name is Philip Michael Lester. He is 37 years old as of 2024 and holds an Aquarius birth sign. Phil and Martyn attended Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School. He later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in English Language and Linguistics in 2008 and a Master of Arts in Video Post-production with Visual Effects in 2009, both from the University of York.
Professional Life
The first YouTube video upload of 2006 in February, ‘Awaiting the Tide’ was a game-changer for this effervescent 19-year-old chap back then. His first vlog ‘Phil’s Video Blog – 27th March 2006’ was on his main YouTube channel, AmazingPhil, which also set him rolling to his meteoric rise to fame.
Lester also has a second channel, LessAmazingPhil. Lester occasionally broadcasts hour-long live shows on this channel, as well as on YouNow. He is a part of the popular ‘Fantastic Foursome’ group of British YouTubers which comprises Dan Howell, Chris Kendall, and PJ Liguori. He worked alongside Dan Howell to create a joint channel, DanAndPhilGames, a portal for playing and recording video games.
Furthermore, from 2009 to 2011, Lester participated in RTÉ’s Ireland-based cross-media show, ApartmentRed. And, in 2010, Lester and Howell took part in the live, annual 24-hour internet broadcast “Stickaid”, a fundraiser for charity UNICEF.

He has also interviewed other internet entertainers on Channel 4 News in October 2012 about the risen popularity of YouTube and video blogging as a profession. In 2013, he along with Howell appeared on Friday Download, a BAFTA award-winning CBBC TV show. From 2014 to 2016, they hosted the worldwide YouTube Livestream of the Brit Awards as well as made backstage videos for their channel.
In 2015, they had voice cameo appearances in the UK cinema release of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Big Hero 6 as Technician 1 & 2. However, this version is not in the UK home release. In the following year, the pair also guest-starred in fellow YouTuber PJ Liguori’s online series Oscar’s Hotel for Fantastical Creatures, voicing anthropomorphic food items Brie and Rash.
In December 2016, they even voiced two gorilla princes named Majinuni and Hafifu respectively, in the episode “The Lost Gorillas” in Disney Junior’s The Lion Guard.

Hence, on the website, music videos are shown that fans have made and emailed to Dan and Phil. The entire show is streamed in the video, live on the BBC Radio 1 website. As of April 2016, BBC Radio 1’s “Internet Takeover” has been put on hiatus after it was announced that Dan and Phil were going on tour in the United States for three months.
Furthermore, he and Howell released the book The Amazing Book Is Not On Fire in October 2015. He also worked alongside Howell in BBC Studios’ TalentWorks to release a movie of Interactive Introverts. It also included bonus features such as behind-the-scenes content and director’s commentary, on Blu-ray, and DVD, and available for digital download in December 2018.

In 2014, he along with his brother, Martyn, and Howell co-founded IRL Digital, Ltd., a company that produces and sells the merchandise of several other media personalities, beginning with Dan and Phil Shop and branching out from there.

In August 2015, Howell along with Lester created an app, The 7 Second Challenge, based on a YouTube challenge. The challenge was started by Lester in a 2014 video on his main channel and the app was discontinued in 2019. In October 2017, they also released a party board game via Big Potato, Truth Bombs, the brainchild of Lester. To date, he hasn’t endorsed any brands or products.
