Nate Diaz started to compete in World Extreme Cagefighting(WEC) before joining the UFC. He fought against then-champion Hermes Franca for the WEC Lightweight Championship at WEC 24 in 2006. However, Nate lost the match by submission in the second round of the fight. After this event, Zuffia, LLC’s parent company of the UFC acquired the WEC. Nate joined as a contestant in The Ultimate Fighter 5 and fought under Jen’s Pulver team.
He defeated Rob Emerson in the preliminary round by submission. Nate defeated his fellow Team Pulver teammate by triangle choke submission in the first round in the quarterfinals.
