Kumail Nanjiani is a well-known Pakistani-American stand-up comic, actor, and journalist. Kumail Nanjiani hosts a podcast that is best known for his HBO comedy series Silicon Valley.

Early Life

Professional Life

Kumail Nanjiani did not want to work in an office and instead wanted to pursue a career as a comedian after finishing his studies. In mid-2007, he debuted his one-man play, ‘Unpronounceable,’ at Lakeshore Theater in Chicago, to great acclaim and broad media exposure. In 2008, he made his first appearance on television in an episode of ‘Saturday Night Live,’ in which he played an uncredited Indian reporter. He had a big role as Pakistani staffer Kumail in the television sitcom series ‘Michael & Michael Have Issues’ the following year, appearing in two episodes of ‘The Colbert Report’.

In the 2010 romantic comedy film ‘Life as We Know It,’ he played a minor role. He performed in six episodes of the TV show ‘Googy’ and starred in a sketch on ‘College Humor Originals in 2011. In July of that year, he co-hosted ‘The Indoor Kids,’ a video game and nerd culture podcast with Ali Baker of G4TV’s ‘X-Play,’. Replaced a month later by his wife Emily.

During 2011-14, he played Pindar Singh in the TNT series “Franklin & Bash,” and he appeared in around a dozen episodes of “Portlandia” between 2011 and 2017. In the second season of ‘Burning Love,’ and appeared as a guest on HBO’s ‘Veep.’ He appeared in films such as ‘The Five-Year Engagement,’ ‘The Kings of Summer,’ ‘Hell Baby,’ and ‘Sex Tape’ between 2012 and 2014.

He’s been a regular guest and comptroller on Dan Harmon’s podcast ‘Harmontown’ since 2013, often playing ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ with the host. Comedy Central picked up his program, “The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail,” which he co-created with his wife Emily V. Gordon, and hosted by Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani, in late June 2013.

In July 2013, the channel broadcast a special episode titled “Beta Male” about him. Followed by the premiere of “The Meltdown” a year later in July 2014. He has been playing computer programmer Dinesh Chugtai in the HBO sitcom “Silicon Valley” since April 2014. Both this show and ‘The Meltdown’ became hugely successful in the United States, and he became a household name. He started hosting the weekly podcast “The X-Files Files” in July 2014. Featured a lot of former “The X-Files” authors, creators, actors, and directors. In the years since, he has been on several television programs, including his former classmate’s “The Pete Holmes Show,” “Key and Peele,” “Inside Amy Schumer,” and “The X.”

He has also provided his voice to several video games, including ‘The Walking Dead: Season Two,’ ‘Mass Effect: Andromeda,’ and ‘Middle-earth: Shadow of War.’ In 2015, he voiced the character, Mshak Moradi, in the audio drama “Hunt the Truth” as part of the advertisement campaign for “Halo 5: Guardians.”
On January 20, 2017, he starred alongside Zoe Kazan in the semi-autobiographical romantic comedy “The Big Sick,”. Which he co-wrote with his wife Emily. He most recently returned to ‘SNL’ to host an episode on October 14, 2017. In which his monologue about Islamophobia received a tremendous amount of attention.

In 2006, Kumail Nanjiani began dating Emily Vance Gordon, a family therapist but had to keep the relationship hidden from his parents. He eventually told his parents after Emily became ill with a mysterious inflammatory condition. They were supportive mainly because she was sick. After Emily recovered four months later. On July 14, 2007, in Chicago, they got married.
